Xenophobic Violence in South Africa: An Analysis of Trends, Causal Factors and Responses

In this report, the authors draw from more than a decade of quantitative and qualitative research exploring xenophobic violence in South Africa. Beginning in the mid-2000s, the research presents a systematic investigation into the nature, causal factors, and implications of xenophobic violence plaguing the country. It also explores the nature and effectiveness of state and civil society responses and interventions aimed at addressing the violence. Currently, the research is conducted under the auspices of the Xenowatch Project. This report provides a temporal, spatial, and causal analysis of the violence, and an analysis of responses and interventions made to stop or prevent this violence.
